A Word from Our Leaders
John Schreiber is vice president of business sales for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA). In this leadership role, he’s responsible for overseeing the sales and leasing teams for the Las Vegas Convention Center, the No. 1 trade show destination in North America for the past 26 years. He also leads the business development team, the convention sales team, and the LVCVA Eastern regional sales office in Washington, D.C.
John has more than 25 years of experience in the hospitality industry in both Northern and Southern Nevada. Before joining the LVCVA, he served as leisure sale manager for Caesars Palace and as vice president of sales for Station Casinos. He is the current chairman of the Southwest Chapter of the International Association of Exhibitions and Events. John has also earned a number of awards and distinctions including the Certified Exhibition Manager designation from the International Association of Exhibitions and Events.
Q&A with John Schreiber
Beginning October 1, the limit on the number of people allowed to gather in Nevada increased. Can you expand on this directive a bit and what it means for meetings and events?
The entire destination is committed to bringing back meetings and events in a smart and responsible way. Las Vegas has always set the gold standard for the industry, and once again, we are putting the health and safety of our clients, staff and community first in order to deliver on our promise of a world-class business experience.
Governor Steve Sisolak announced increased attendee limits of up to 250 per room, or 50% capacity, whichever is less, with a maximum of 1,000 per group – not including staff or talent. Also, larger venues (those that hold over 2,500 fixed seating or more) can host up to 10% of the seating capacity.
This is a step in the right direction for the destination, and an exciting development as we look to bring trade shows, sports and other events back to Las Vegas.
What does the increase in gathering size mean for the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC)?
Essentially, it means our clients can get back to business. If a convention or conference will have more than 250 attendees, there’s an opportunity to host up to 1,000, with approval of a safety plan. The group will need a Large Gathering Venue COVID-19 Preparedness & Safety Plan, approved by the state, and we can help navigate that process.
What’s coming up in 2021 that meeting planners and business travelers should be aware of and excited about?
The increase in gathering sizes is just the first step for the steady return of meetings and events business. We’re confident that these capacity limits will continue to increase through the remainder of the year and into 2021. The LVCC will work with clients to ensure that the proper safety protocols are in place, including social distancing, dedicated entrances/exits, and minimized sharing of restrooms and food and beverage stations. We’re confident that in collaboration with our meetings and events partners and clients, we’ll have a strong showing for next year.
The LVCC was awarded the Global Biorisk Advisory Council (GBAC) STAR facility accreditation by ISSA, the world’s leading trade association for the cleaning industry. Considered the gold standard for safe facilities, the GBAC program was designed to control the risks associated with infectious agents, including the virus responsible for COVID-19. The LVCC was the first facility in Nevada to receive the accreditation.
This has been an unprecedented year, but major developments are still moving forward in Las Vegas, including the LVCC’s West Hall expansion and the Convention Center Loop, the innovative underground transportation system by Elon Musk’s The Boring Company, which will both be finished at the end of this year.
Circa Resort & Casino is downtown Las Vegas’ first casino constructed from the ground up in four decades, and will debut several restaurants and bars, casino, sportsbook, and multilevel pool amphitheater called Stadium Swim on Oct. 28. The property’s guestrooms and suites will debut on Dec. 28. In summer 2021, Resorts World Las Vegas, a $4.3 billion integrated resort, is set to open its doors on Las Vegas Boulevard across from the Las Vegas Convention Center. And we’re looking forward to the start of in-person events at the new $2 billion Allegiant Stadium, so there’s an abundance of excitement as the new year approaches.
